How to make a good fantasy name

  1. Give each people its own sound. Readers notice patterns. If your elves use soft l, r and th sounds and your dwarves use hard k, g and r, a reader knows who is speaking from the name alone.
  2. Keep main characters easy to say. Two or three syllables is plenty. Save the long, formal names for kings, ancient beings and titles.
  3. Vary the first letters. If your hero is Kael, do not name the villain Kail. Different first letters and lengths keep a cast easy to follow.
  4. Let places explain themselves. Town names like Ravenford or Saltmere hint at what is there. Kingdoms can be stranger, because they are older.
