How to pick a good D&D character name

  1. Say it out loud. Your party will use this name for months. If it takes two tries to pronounce, shorten it or keep the long version for formal moments.
  2. Match the race, then break one rule. A dwarf with a hard, short name sounds right; a dwarf with a soft elven name is a story waiting to be told.
  3. Let the family name hint at the past. Clan and family names say where a character comes from: a trade, a place, a famous deed.
  4. Avoid clashes at the table. Pick a name that starts with a different letter from the rest of the party, so nobody mixes up Kael and Kail mid-combat.

Naming NPCs on the fly

Players always ask the innkeeper’s name. Before a session, generate 20 names for the races in your setting and star them, so you have a ready list of NPC names when the party wanders somewhere unplanned. Shopkeepers and guards rarely need a family name; switch it off for quick one-word names. For the town, kingdom or tavern itself, use the fantasy name generator.
