Games to play with a random word
- Pictionary. Set Word type to Nouns and take turns drawing the word while the others guess. Things you can picture, like a lighthouse or a cactus, work best.
- Charades. Switch to Verbs and act the word out without speaking: juggle, sneeze, knit.
- Word guessing. Set Number of letters to 5 and keep the word secret. Your friend guesses five letter words and you tell them which letters are right.
- Story chain. Draw 5 words and write or tell a short story that uses all of them, in any order.
Using random words for writing and ideas
A random word is a quick way past a blank page. Draw one noun and one adjective and you have a prompt: a lonely lighthouse, a grumpy robot. Draw three and the story almost writes itself.
The same trick helps with naming. Mix two random words, like Copper and Lantern, to get a name for a project, a band or a fantasy tavern. For names of people and places, try the fantasy name generator, and for letters only, the random letter generator.
