What is XAN?

XAN is a focused, open-source music player designed for Android that helps you manage your library, playlists, queue, and lyrics without any subscription layers getting in the way. It is built to keep your music in focus, offering local playback for the music already on your device along with artist downloads and a clean interface featuring customizable glass and solid appearance options.

The app is designed for Android users who want a simple, distraction-free listening experience with essential controls close at hand. It includes a 10-band equalizer preview on the web and dedicated audio controls in the Android app, letting you tune your sound with adjustable bands and presets.

Developed in the open, XAN's source code, releases, and development history are entirely public on GitHub. Users can explore the code, build it themselves, contribute to the project, or support development via Ko-fi.

Retention
If possible find a way to build an extrinsic trigger into your target users workflow that reminds them when they should be using it. Eventually as the user goes through enough loops and builds a habit it becomes an intrinsic trigger and they don't need the reminder anymore.

Use extrinsic triggers to build habits before intrinsic ones take hold

Nir Eyal's Hooked framework starts every habit loop with an extrinsic trigger. Carter gives two modern AI-era examples: Granola sends a calendar-linked desktop notification before meetings (helpful in its own right), and Whisper Flow places a subtle widget at the bottom of the screen that trains users to reach for voice-to-text. The goal is to run enough loops that the trigger internalizes. Not every product can build an extrinsic trigger into the workflow — but if possible, the habit formation speed advantage is significant.

Product
We are just very frugal. I'm not gonna pay a margin of ads to an agency. We have a stable of really strong editors who do all the editing. I shoot with a teammate for two hours on a Sunday — that's the video for the week.

In-House Creative as Competitive Moat — Frugality Beats Agency Margins

Speechify's four company values are product quality, speed, leading with love, and frugality — and frugality explains why they never outsource creative. Agencies add a margin layer without adding brand understanding. Keeping creative in-house means the people making ads are the same people who understand the product, the users, and the mission. This is the same reason they never outsourced engineering.

There's a play for whatever you're stuck on.
